Ada Willetta / Netta Harmer (1877 – 1950)

Ada Willetta/Netta Harmer was born on 15th July 1877. She was the third child of John Harmer Jnr., which makes her our John Harmer’s grandaughter.

Early life

Working life

In the 1900 U.S. Federal State Census we find 22 year old Netta working as a live-in housekeeper for James Doty, who was a 68 year old home owner. She had been out of work for 10 months out of the previous 12. Five years later she was back at home with her parents at Bernards Township and not working.

An Ada M. Harmer, born in 1877 to an English father and a N.J. born mother appears in the 1910 U.S. Federal Census in Bronx Assembly District 34 (New York), working as a nurse at a ‘Home for Incurables’. This could be Ada with her middle initial recorded incorrectly.

In 1924 Ada registered to vote giving her address as 156 E. 79th Street, Manhattan, New York. She seems to have been living in a boarding house.

Death

A lady called Willetta Harmer, born in 1877, passed away at Manhattan on 11th September 1950.  This seems likely to be Ada.
